McCOOK, Neb. - Superintendent Grant Norgaard shared the exciting news with the McCook School Board of Education during their meeting on December 11, 2023. He announced that the McCook school district has been classified as a "Great" district and its students consistently outperform not only the state of Nebraska but also schools within its peer group.

Norgaard proudly stated that McCook students surpassed the state average on every assessment at every grade level. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it is the first time since the state began assessing students that the district has accomplished such a feat. in years there was always one area where they were slightly under the state score and it was a different area each year.

During the meeting, district officials had a positive discussion with Nebraska State Senator Dave Murman regarding potential school legislation. Norgaard emphasized that this legislation could have implications for the school system, students, teachers, and communities. However, the conversation with Senator Murman revealed no surprises, leaving the district hopeful for favorable outcomes. Norgarard said that he was grateful that the senator came on his own spending about an hour of his time visiting and took a tour of the junior high.

Norgaard also informed the board about an upcoming upgrade to the district's website. Currently utilizing SOCS as their web server, the district will be transitioning to Apogee. This transition aims to improve communication between staff and parents, providing a smoother and more efficient experience.

In addition, the district will be changing the teacher application process from Frontline to Talented. Norgaard explained that this modification will streamline the application process for new teachers, saving valuable time and resources.

Among other business matters, the audited financial report from KSO CPAs was approved by the board. Furthermore, Sampson Construction received approval as construction manager at risk for the proposed new Junior High School addition and Senior High renovation project. Superintendent Norgaard and Board President Brad Hays were entrusted with the decision-making process for this project.

The purchase of a new bus was also approved, with Thomas Buses emerging as the preferred bus company unanimously selected by the district's bus drivers. Thomson's bid was not only the preferred choice but also the most cost-effective option, costing $131,350 due to the necessary handicap modifications including a lift and the capacity to transport four passengers in wheelchairs. Norgaard said “We’ve run into issues, not very often, with transporting our students that are wheelchair-bound in the past. This will take care of any issues we run into in the future.”

The board acknowledged the resignation of Norabel Chessmore, Senior High Journalism instructor, who will be relocating due to her husband's work commitments. Brad Hayes, president read her resignation letter where she said that she appreciated the opportunities and experience she’s had working with the wonderful students from both the junior high and high school.  Craig Dickes, High School Principal said “She has been tremendous, she helped us out in a tough spot initially and has been nothing but great for the kids, the school, and the staff.”

Many of the board members showed gratitude for the opportunity to attend the State School Board Conference noting that it was nice to hear what other school districts are doing. Jonathan Frank commented that the students at the high school have shown increasing respect for everyone, and it makes for such a better culture. Teresa Thomas reported how great the FFA auction was and how supportive the community is. Tom Bredvick thanked the support structure in place for students applying for scholarships. Charlie McPherson thanked the district for allowing him to attend the NASB state conference. Scott Barger appreciates the board members for all their support as his first year on the board wraps up. Mike Langan enjoyed the school board state conference, and we need the state of Nebraska to help with teacher interest and retention. Jeff Gross thanked Darin Nichols for all the work he puts in with athletics and activities. Hays thanks all the teachers for a great first semester of the school year. Norgaard made positive comments on the unified bowling squad and Ms. Kinne for sponsoring them.

Lastly, an executive session was held to discuss negotiations with the McCook Education Association and to evaluate the performance of Superintendent Norgaard.
