McCOOK Neb. - A representative for Senator Deb Fisher responded to some heated questions from a community member at the Red Willow County Republican's forum on Sunday, March 17th, 2024.
Three federal candidates were represented at the forum: Cole Lumsden represented Senator Deb Fischer, John Walz for the House of Representatives 3rd District, and John Glenn Weaver for the US Senate.
Lumsden, the 19-year-old political director for Fischer and student, spoke of Fischer's priorities and thanked the crowd for their involvement at the local level, which made a huge impact. According to Lumsend, Fischer's priority is securing the border. "If there's going to be a bill that's passed, and if we're going to spend money on our southern border, it better be to fully 100% secure, no question," Lumsend said.
Another priority is standing up to China, which, along with Russia, is buying American Farmland all across the country, including right here in Nebraska.
After each spoke, the floor was opened to questions and comments. One community member showed concern regarding securing the election.
Things got heated when a community member incoherently accused Deb Fisher of not doing enough to prevent boys from using girls' restrooms in schools. The man who said that he should have stayed home due to a fever also shared that he had called and left between 45 and 50 messages for the Senator regarding the issue, and he was disappointed that he had only received a single letter back.
Another community member asked the man if Fisher had done something specifically to support males being able to share the girls' locker room. The fevered gentleman replied, "I don't know, but for crying out loud, she didn't stop it."
Lumsend responded, "I appreciate you being here. As I said at the beginning of my little bit there, it's important for everybody to be involved at the local level because it does make an impact. And if you disagree with Senator Musher on some of her votes and positions, that's okay. And if you'd like, I'd love to speak with you about it because that's why we come to these meetings."
John Glen Weaver is running to fill the remaining two years of Ben Sasse's term for the US Senate. Weaver is a retired Lieutenant Colonel with over 22 years in the Air Force. Weaver said, "I was deployed to combat in Iraq and Afghanistan several times on multiple combat tours. You know, I'm standing before you today, having served my country and defended the Constitution. That's why I'm running for the United States Senate."
He considers himself a conservative Republican and a constitutionalist. He prioritizes securing our borders and ending funding of foreign wars.
John Walz is running for the House of Representatives in the 3rd District. He served five years in the Marine Corps as an aircraft mechanic. He later earned a mechanical engineering degree, bringing him to Nebraska. After the company he worked with closed, he went into business for himself and started a discount grocery store.
Walz said that after Adrian Smith was going to vote for that second continuing resolution last year, he said he might throw his hat into the ring. He went into about two and a half weeks of prayer and discernment and decided that this was where God wanted him to be. Walz said that much of the reason for running comes down to his ten kids. " We're leaving a tyranny." Walz added, "The government right now is turned against us."
Running for the Hitchcock and Dundy County school board, Bruce Desautels also attended and addressed the group.
